Redskins GM Allen: "We would make the move again with Donovan"

Most people around the NFL felt that the Redskins trade last spring for QB Donovan McNabb was a failure, considering McNabb was benched repeatedly, while his former team, the Eagles, won the NFC East. Washington GM Bruce Allen, however, is not one of those people.

Allen told CSN Washington on Saturday that if given the opportunity, he would trade for McNabb again. Despite the team's poor record and the quarterbacks inconsistent play on the field, Allen felt the trade had more benefits than negatives.

"We would make the move again with Donovan," Allen told the TV network.

McNabb threw 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2010, and did not get along well with head coach Mike Shanahan. Allen said that the team's 6-10 record "wasn't what we had dreamed of for the season," but didn't want to place the blame on his quarterbacks shoulders.

"When you're inside the locker room, you have all the facts," Allen said. "You know the affections and feelings we have for Donovan as a person and player. We'll let people speculate and create rumors. Hopefully they go off the wrong tracks and that will give us an advantage when we start playing.

"It was the first year for everybody with the Washington Redskins, and it takes some time to learn the other person's desires."

The team signed McNabb to a contract extension last season, but they are expected to opt out of that deal as soon as the lockout ends.

Jerry Tipton: NCAA, UK still at odds over Cal's 500th

Earlier this month, the chairman of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions sent University of Kentucky President Lee T. Todd Jr. a letter asking the school to publicly acknowledge it was wrong to recognize John Calipari's 500th coaching victory this past season. Chairman Dennis E. Thomas, the commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, also told Todd that the wording of UK's statement "must be approved by the office of the Committee on Infractions prior to its release."

AFC North best bets to break through in 2011

With strong reason to believe a significant breakthrough could be imminent in the NFL's ongoing labor impasse, the time seems right to identify each team's top breakout candidates for the coming season (rookies not included).

The second of an eight-part divisional series begins with the players most likely to be attending 2011 coming-out parties in the AFC North.

Baltimore Ravens

NT Terrence Cody — The 6-4, 349-pound Cody flashed intriguing potential as a rookie last season. In addition to boasting rare size, Cody moves well. If he is ready for a bigger role, he'll strengthen a stout defensive line in need of some youthful reinforcements. Veteran Kelly Gregg has been a productive starter, but he turns 35 in November, and Cody is viewed as his successor. Running on the Ravens is a chore, and Gregg has played a major role in those run-stuffing efforts; if Cody plays to his potential, he can help ensure that will continue to be true in 2011 and beyond. He's one of several young Ravens defenders to watch this season, including CB Jimmy Smith, the Ravens' first-round pick.

Cincinnati Bengals

TE Jermaine Gresham — Pop quiz: Who led NFL rookie tight ends in catches a season ago? The answer is Gresham, who snagged 52 passes for a mere 471 yards in a WR-dominated scheme. Gresham's average catch came just 2.1 yards downfield, as the Bengals fed him a diet of short passes. However, Gresham could surprise this season. For starters, he has the speed to stretch the field. Also, the Bengals have changed offensive schemes, with Jay Gruden replacing Bob Bratkowski as coordinator. Moreover, with WR Terrell Owens unlikely to be re-signed and Chad Ochocinco no sure thing to be on the roster in 2011, Gresham could become a bigger part of the passing game. Overall, Gresham's 52 catches in a scheme where he was far down the list of options is a positive sign — and perhaps a signal of better things to come.

Cleveland Browns

QB Colt McCoy — Conditions aren't entirely favorable for McCoy to thrive in 2011, but give him credit — he has taken ownership of the offense. He has organized several player workouts as Cleveland transitions to new head coach Pat Shurmur's version of the West Coast offense. Ideally, the Browns would be learning the offense under the watchful eyes of Shurmur, his coaching staff and team president Mike Holmgren, but the lockout has shelved those plans. Nonetheless, McCoy, acting as the leader of the offense, is doing his part to stay sharp. The Browns' revamped offensive scheme should suit McCoy well. He's a precise passer, which makes him a nice fit. Moreover, McCoy could get a chance to attack downfield more in the offense, which figures to target the wide receivers more frequently. McCoy showed potential in Year One. The Browns were at their best when he was in the lineup, and he should be able to build on that.

Pittsburgh Steelers

DE Ziggy Hood — Hood received valuable experience last season, starting 11 games (nine regular-season, two postseason) after Aaron Smith left the lineup with a triceps injury. Even if Smith returns to the starting lineup in 2011, Hood figures to play quite a bit, considering the promise he showed a season ago and the need to reduce the wear and tear on Smith and fellow DE Brett Keisel, who are in their 30s. Hood, who notched three sacks in 2011, is one of the better pass rushers among the defensive linemen, and that is his strength. Even if he returns to a complementary role this season, he could have a material impact on the Steelers' defense.

Fathers pass the legacy (and the ball) to their sons

It's a tradition likely as old as football itself: Father and son, heading out to the yard to toss a ball around.

While millions of families engage in the pastime, there are a few who have turned the game of backyard catch into a career. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, there have been 187 father-son tandems that have played pro football. Of those, both generations of players were quarterbacks in the NFL seven times. That exclusive list includes a handful of Super Bowl winners, a current and future Hall of Famer and even a nominee for vice president of the United States.

In honor of Father's Day, here are the seven father-son passing duos, ranked in order of total passing yards they've thrown for in their pro career.

1. Archie and Peyton Manning / 78,739 yards — Dad Archie was a good quarterback on some awful teams, playing 14 years, mostly with the Saints. Though he was twice named to the Pro Bowl, the elder Manning only won 35 career games. The second of his three sons, Peyton, the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft, has been a bit more successful. In 13 pro seasons, the Colts QB has been named to the AFC Pro Bowl 11 times and won three PFW/PFWA MVP awards. He also led Indianapolis to a title in Super Bowl XLI.

2. Archie and Eli Manning / 46,557 yards — While his middle son is going to be remembered as an all-time great, Archie's youngest offspring isn't too bad himself. Also a No. 1 pick, Eli was selected first in 2004 by the Chargers before being dealt to the Giants during the draft. In his seven seasons in New York, Eli has helped the team reach the postseason three times, including the Giants' unlikely Super Bowl championship run in 2008.

3. Bob and Brian Griese / 44,532 yards — Bob Griese joined the Dolphins in 1967 and was immediately named the starting quarterback. Head coach Don Shula came aboard three years later, and together the duo helped Miami become one of the NFL's premier teams, winning Super Bowls XII and XIII before Griese retired in 1980. Bob was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. His son, Brian, was a great college player, guiding the University of Michigan to the National Championship in 1997, but he couldn't duplicate his father's pro success. Brian played for four teams during his 11-year career, with his best season coming as a Bronco in 2000, when he led the NFL in passer rating at 102.9.

4. Phil and Chris Simms / 36,579 yards — Though he didn't post standout numbers, Phil Simms helped the Giants emerge as a powerhouse team in the 1980s, guiding it to a win in Super Bowl XXI. He was also the QB for much of the 1990 season that ended in another championship, but he broke his foot in December and missed the playoffs. After retiring in 1993, Phil has become a broadcaster and has been able to watch his son, Chris, play. The younger Simms has only started more than five games once since he was drafted in '03, and did not take a snap last season.

5. Jack and Jeff Kemp / 27,448 — Before passing bills as a nine-time House representative and being on a presidential ticket as Bob Dole's running mate, Jack Kemp was a passing star for the Bills. A seven-time Pro Bowler and one of the first great players of the AFL, Jack played from 1957-69, mainly in Buffalo. He finished in the top five in AFL passing yards five times prior to moving to politics. His son, Jeff, became a pro in '81 with the Rams, the team he earned the majority of his starts with during his 10-year career.

6. David and Charlie Whitehurst / 6,712 yards — Save for some limited action in 2010, nearly all of the Whitehursts' combined yardage comes courtesy of David, who led the Packers in the late 70s and early 80s. Problems throwing interceptions (51 in his career, compared to only 28 touchdowns) limited his success in Green Bay. Charlie's opportunity may come in 2011 after starting two games for the Seahawks down the stretch last year. The first four seasons of the younger Whitehurst's career were spent in San Diego, where Charlie never threw a regular-season pass for the Chargers.

7. Emery and Kent Nix / 4,196 yards — World War II interrupted Emery's career with the Giants, as he saw the field in 1943 and '46. He also played defensive back for New York. His son played six seasons, mostly with Pittsburgh in the late '60s.

Pryor will enter supplemental draft

QB Terrelle Pryor spoke to the media Tuesday for the first time since leaving Ohio State and confirmed he will enter the NFL's supplemental draft.

Pryor appeared at a press conference in Miami with agent Drew Rosenhaus, who he hired on Monday.

"I'd like to say sorry to the coaching staff, say sorry to my teammates, say sorry to all Buckeye nation and all the Buckeye fans across the country," Pryor said. "I never meant to hurt anybody directly or indirectly with my conduct off the field, and I am truly sorry."

He also had some words for head coach Jim Tressel, who resigned amidst the scandal.

"In terms of coach Jim Tressel, a special shout out. I'm sorry for what all went down and I apologize with all my heart. I love you just like a father. You taught me a lot, and I apologize for putting you in a situation and taking you out of a job and a place that you loved to be," he said. "I regret the fact that you're not there anymore, and I regret the fact that I'm not there anymore."

The supplemental draft is expected to take place at some point in July. Teams may bid 2012 draft picks on Pryor.

The NCAA is investigating illegal benefits that Pryor may have received at Ohio State. He had already been suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season before deciding to leave Ohio State.

The way we see it

Pryor has been courted by the UFL and CFL, and some around the league believed it would be best for him to spend a season in one of those leagues before entering the NFL. But it's no surprise Pryor will enter the supplemental draft. Pryor certainly showed his athleticism in college, but there are questions about whether or not he can be a quarterback in the NFL. Some team will take a flier on him and place a bid, though likely not higher than a fourth-round pick.

Ravens deny assistants have received new contracts

Updated 10:34 a.m., June 15

There are conflicting reports as to whether or not the Ravens have given contract extensions to all of their assistant coaches through the end of the 2012 season.

On Monday, Albert Breer of NFL.com reported that the team had extended the contracts of their entire staff, ensuring continuity under head coach John Harbaugh.

On Wednesday, the Baltimore Sun's "Ravens Insider" blog cited a team source that claimed Breer's report was inaccurate. Ravens executive vice president Kevin Byrne told the newspaper that the team would not announce the length of any contract.

In January, Baltimore signed Harbaugh to a three-year extension, through 2014. At that time, the team chose not to give its assistant coaches new deals, and even forced a 25 percent pay cut because of the lockout. That plan was later rescinded, and all the money taken away was refunded.

The Ravens have made the playoffs each season since Harbaugh was hired in 2008.

NFL, NFLPA wrap up Wednesday's talks; release joint statement

The NFL and NFLPA released a joint statement on Wednesday after concluding talks in Maryland.

"Discussions between NFL owners and players under the auspices of Chief Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan took place again this week and will continue. At the request of Judge Boylan, both sides have agreed to maintain the confidentiality of the substance of the talks."

Commissioner Roger Goodell and owners Jerry Richardson, Clark Hunt, Robert Kraft, Dean Spanos and John Mara represented the league. NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith was there for the players, along with Kevin Mawae, Domonique Foxworth, Tony Richardson, Jeff Saturday and Brian Waters.

The two sides met for two days in Maryland this week. They had two days of meetings on Long Island last week and met in St. Charles, Ill., the week prior.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that lawyers have re-entered negotiations. The two sides are working toward a new labor agreement that would end the current lockout.

The NFL owners are meeting in Chicago on June 21.

The way we see it

Many of the reports over the last week have been very optimistic regarding the talks, with some believing that a new deal could be reached within a month. The two sides have buckled down and are clearly serious, not to mention have been releasing joint statements updating the progress.

One key is that while there have been some leaks regarding how much progress has been made, there haven't been details or numbers leaked like we saw in March before talks fell apart.

Sources indicated to PFW last week that next Tuesday's owners meetings will be a key date. For now, there continues to be optimism since both sides are talking and will continue to talk.

AEG CEO talks to five teams about move to L.A.

Tim Leiweke, president/CEO of the group trying to build a stadium in downtown Los Angeles, has spoken with representatives of the Vikings, Chargers, Raiders, Rams and Jaguars about the proposed venue.

Leiweke heads up the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). According to the Orange County Register, he said all those teams are "in the mix," with the most recent discussions taking place a week ago.

AEG is prepared to acquire a majority stake in an NFL team to bring it to Los Angeles. Their $1 billion plan for a stadium is one of two proposals. It has been 15 years since there was football in L.A., before the Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders to Oakland within months of each other.

Raiders CEO Amy Trask said in a statement, "The team is not for sale. It will remain with the Davis family."

Chargers spokesman Mark Fabiani told The Associated Press that owner Alex Spanos and his family were not interested in selling a majority stake of the team.

Cardinals' WR situation 'wide open' behind Fitzgerald

With the Cardinals' QB situation continuing to be totally up in the air, and second-round rookie Ryan Williams creating an eyebrow-raising logjam at running back, it's easy to lose sight of the team's other position battles. But it appears the competition for the team's second and third receiver spots behind Larry Fitzgerald couldn't be more wide open, with free-agent holdovers Steve Breaston and Early Doucet looking like they could get a serious run for their money from second-year pros Andre Roberts and Stephen Williams.

We hear both Roberts, who got off to a shaky start as a rookie but finished strong, and Williams, who did just the opposite, have stood out in recent players-only workouts. Doucet, meanwhile, continues to rehab from offseason surgery — he was placed on injured reserve last season after suffering a hip flexor injury against Carolina in Week 15 — and has not been attending any workouts. Both Doucet and Breaston have health issues that continue to be cause for concern [the duo missed nine games combined last season].

"I think the depth chart right now would have Fitzgerald one, Breaston two and Roberts three ahead of Doucet," said one team observer who has been on hand at more than a few of the Cardinals' workouts, including one earlier this week at Scottsdale Community College that had about 20 participants, most of them either free agents or players from other teams. "They really liked Roberts as the season wore on, and he looked incredibly fast and athletic the other day."

NFL, NFLPA confirm discussions between owners, players

The NFL and NFLPA released a joint statement Wednesday confirming that discussions have resumed this week.

"NFL owners and players have engaged in further confidential discussions before Chief Magistrate Judge Boylan this week. Those discussions will continue."

League spokesman Greg Aiello tweeted that commissioner Roger Goodell, Jerry Richardson, Clark Hunt, Robert Kraft, John Mara and Dean Spanos attended this week's talks. All five of those owners are members of the NFL's labor committee and have been involved in most of the negotiations.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith was joined by player reps Kevin Mawae, Jeff Saturday, Mike Vrabel, Tony Richardson and Domonique Foxworth at the meetings.

The two sides reportedly met at a hotel on Long Island, per NFL Network's Albert Breer, in talks that resumed on Tuesday. They first reopened the talks without lawyers last week in a western Chicago suburb.

Goodell spoke with Buccaneers season-ticket holders on Wednesday. "Both sides are working hard to reach an agreement. That's a positive step for everybody," he said. "We are going to continue to work at it. I believe both sides want to find solutions. I'm hopeful we're going to be successful."

In a story on NFL.com posted Wednesday, Breer cited sources from both sides acknowledging that there is a window in the month of June to get a deal done. "Both sides feel the pressure now," a league source said in the story. According to the report, the league could lose around $1 billion if the preseason is canceled.

The U.S. 8th District Court of Appeals is expected to have a decision on the legality of the lockout by early July.

The way we see it

As always, any type of discussions between the two sides is always a good thing. For the NFL and NFLPA to release a joint statement confirming the talks also shows the commitment to get to work.

Players have complained that the lack of presence by owners who can get a deal done has made negotiations difficult. But influential owners are on hand for these talks.

Arguably the most important part of this news is the last line of the statement: "Those discussions will continue." As long as the two sides keep talking and negotiations don't hit a snag, there can be much-needed optimism on the labor front.
